Stool #12 in Black Walnut

November 2024: My first stool made entirely of Black Walnut

My friend gave me some scrap pieces of Black Walnut that he got from a furniture factory where he works. They throw this stuff away because it's too small to mess with.

it's all cut into 2X2 strips and has been run through jointer. Since the top of my tapered legs is wider than 2 inches, I glued three strips together so I could rip it at an angle to make two legs.

I glued a fiew pieces to make the top. This turned out surprisingly well. The grain lined up pretty well and when clear polyeurthane was applied, it brought out a "tiger-eye" kind of look.

I've used 2 coats on this stool so far. I'm not sure if I will go for three coats. I've got a nice smooth finisn now and I risk messing it up with another coat.

The first question people have asked is: "Did you stain this to make it so dark?". No, this is the natural look of Black Walnut.
